Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community (SDFC)

Sheringham Dementia Friendly community believe in trying to help all aspects of the community become dementia accessible. This does not just mean businesses and service providers but social groups and community organisations as well. This way those living with dementia can continue to carry on the activities they have always done, stay part of their communities for as long as possible and live well with dementia.

Local Support

SDFC have strong links with local support agencies and have representatives from the Admiral nurses and an Alzheimer’s support worker, who regularly join us at our Dementia support Groups. We also produce a directory of all the local dementia support groups and dementia accessible activities in the local area.

Dementia Friendly Transport

As an organisation SDFC provide free high quality dementia friends and awareness training for businesses. We have instigated dementia friendly bus travel through the training of all the local bus drivers and developing a training package as part of the induction process for all new drivers at Sanders buses. We are also working with Greater Anglia and the Community Rail Partnership to make the bittern Line Dementia Friendly.  Please contact us to access this free service.

Out and About

At present we run 2 dementia support groups in Sheringham. Mindercise takes place on Wednesdays at 12.30 -2 at the Lighthouse. People often come for lunch first at the Lighthouse Community Café. Sessions consist of a short chair based fun exercise class followed by games, activities, singing, laughter, chatting and friendship. We also have support from the Alzheimer’s support worker.

On the third Thursday of the month we have Singing down memory lane and enjoy joining in with well-known songs, a cup of tea and biscuits. This also takes place at the lighthouse from 3-4.30. Come along and find friendship, laughter and support.

Dementia Audits

SDFC is also experienced at providing dementia audits of buildings and venues. Please contact us if we can help you to make your facilities more dementia accessible through layout, signage, furniture, crockery, flooring  etc.
