It is with tremendous sadness that Sheringham Town Council announce the loss of Cllr Mac McGinn B.E.M. His keen wit and sense of humour will be sorely missed by us all.
A proponent of youth services and provisions, Mac leaves behind a legacy of a lifelong commitment to serving his local community.
Mac, who grew up in Heacham, relocated with his family to Sheringham in 1964 and took up the post of Youth and Community Officer for the Town and was involved in building the first purpose built Youth and Community Centre in Norfolk named by members the ‘Teen and Twenty Club’ (A name which has gone down in Sheringham’s History). Mac also became involved in Sheringham Carnival shortly after settling in and continued to help organise the annual event for 26 years. In 1965 Mac set up the first youth football club, and was recognised for his services to football in 1983.
Mac was first elected onto the Sheringham Urban District Council in 1972, then two years later after the Local Government Act came into force granting town councils more authority, he was made Chair of the newly-formed Sheringham Town Council, an honour he accepted again 1985-1989. Mac was then elected as Town Mayor in 2001-2004.
During his near 5 decades in local government, Mac also served as District Councillor for 12 years.
Sheringham Town Council Mayor, Madeleine Ashcroft added;
““Mac” McGinn has played a visible role in many capacities in Sheringham for some 50 years. His contribution through to the Town Council in particular has been comprehensive and spectacular. His knowledge of people, places and the history of the town and its inhabitants was extraordinary. “Mac’s” input to Town Council affairs was therefore invaluable and that input will be sorely missed. “Mac” remained close to the Town Council’s business to the end, always interested and always imparting valuable and grounded advice. There are many people who will miss “Mac’s” presence but his sound advice to all would be his usual, “Listen, Consider, Draw on Experience, Discuss and then Decide together” Valete Mac McGinn.”
Our thoughts and condolences go out to Mac’s family and friends at this time.
